The Story of the Big Five
A long time ago, in the 19th century, hunters in Africa used the name “Big Five” for the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. These animals were known for being strong, clever, and able to fight back when in danger.
The Big Five animals are:
Lion – The king of the jungle, known for its strength and roar.
Leopard – A fast and secretive big cat that hunts at night.
Elephant – The largest land animal, powerful and intelligent.
Rhinoceros – Both black and white rhinos are strong and have sharp horns.
Buffalo – A tough and unpredictable animal that moves in large groups.
Today, people do not hunt these animals. Instead, they go on safaris to see and protect them in the wild.
Best Places to See the Big Five in Tanzania
If you want to see all Big Five animals in one destination, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park are the best choices.
Serengeti National Park is famous for its vast plains and incredible wildlife, including large prides of lions, herds of elephants, elusive leopards, powerful buffalo, and the rare black rhino. The park also hosts the Great Migration, making it one of the best safari destinations in Africa.
Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a natural wonder where the Big Five can be spotted in a single game drive. The crater’s enclosed ecosystem supports a dense population of wildlife, offering excellent chances to see rhinos, lions, elephants, leopards, and buffalo up close.
Tarangire National Park is known for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. While rhinos are not commonly found here, you can see lions, leopards, buffalo, and many other species, making it an excellent addition to your safari itinerary.
